The Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) goes into effect January 1, 2018.

New Illinois law will require ALL prescribers with controlled substance licenses to Enroll in the PMP by January 1, 2018.

There is no cost to enroll or to use the program, which also integrated into many electronic medical records systems. All prescribers with an ILL substance license includes physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and others Must Enroll in the PMP.

Those in the program will be required to attempt checking the PMP Before writing an initial prescription for a Schedule ll opioid. That attempt must be documented in the medical record. There are exceptions oncology treatment; palliative care; and acute traumatic medical conditions, when a supply of 7 days or less is prescribed in the ER.
